Dynamic Anoxia Treatment for the National Museum of the Château de Pau

Bovis Anoxie recently undertook a prestigious dynamic anoxia treatment for the National Museum of the Château de Pau, one of the most iconic monuments in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64). This medieval castle is renowned for being the birthplace of Henry IV. Today, it houses the National Museum of the Château de Pau, which preserves approximately 12,000 works of art and historical objects. To ensure the preservation of this valuable furniture, Bovis Anoxie implemented a dynamic anoxia treatment.

This dynamic anoxia operation was conducted in preparation for the storage of some of the Château de Pau’s furniture in external reserves, to prevent bringing pests into this controlled environment. At the end of the treatment in late July 2024, the furniture will be placed by Bovis Fine Art Nouvelle Aquitaine teams in one of our secure storage spaces in the southwest of France.

Use of the New Dynamic Anoxia Machinery

For this mission, Bovis Anoxie deployed its brand-new dynamic anoxia machinery. More compact than traditional mobile installations, this innovation allows for custom-made bubbles tailored to the specific needs of clients, whether for on-site interventions or at Bovis group agencies. This flexibility was crucial for effectively treating the Château de Pau’s furniture.

Treatment Process and Safety

The historical furniture from the château was placed in a hermetic bubble where nitrogen was injected to replace the oxygen. When the oxygen level drops below 0.1%, the anoxia treatment is maintained for 21 days. This process ensures the complete elimination of all insects at all stages of development, guaranteeing optimal protection of the works.
